This is the most common reason people delay a reading, and it can usually be fixed. Three places to look.

Ask parents and relatives

Do not ask for the clock time. Ask what was happening — before breakfast, during the evening news, on the way home from work. People remember that much better, and a rough window is better than a guess.

Check the paperwork

Birth certificates have the time more often than people think. So do hospital discharge papers, baby books, vaccination cards and old family letters. If the certificate is lost, you can ask the municipal office for a copy.
